Putting Drill For Controlling Speed

This putting drill is one of my favorite putting drills that I am going to teach you. It has to do with improving and being able to control the speed of your putts better. I believe hitting your putts the proper speed is really important. Being able to do this well will eliminate a lot of three putts. When you hit your putts the right speed, often times the ball will still have a chance to go in if the line is only slightly off. Also, if you do miss your long putt but you hit it the proper distance, you will then be left with an easy tap in. Having the skill of being a good lag putter will take a lot of pressure off of your putting in general. Putting an end to three putting is one of the main goals I like to see golfers achieve.

Control Your Distance Better On The Putting Greens

Go out to a practice putting green with three golf balls. Find a spot on the edge of the green right where the fringe starts. Then stand about 8-10 feet away from the spot you picked on the fringe. Now, you are going to roll each of the golf balls to that spot on the fringe that you picked out. You want to get the golf balls to stop as close to the fringe as possible. When you are done with that, go pick up the balls and return to the same spot you were just standing in. Now, I want you to do the same thing only this time Close Your Eyes while you are rolling the golf balls. Closing your eyes will actually help you develop a better feel with you other senses. Then when you are done, go pick up the golf balls and go back to your same spot 8-10 feet away from the fringe. Now take your putter and hit the three balls one at a time and try to get them to stop as close to the edge of the fringe as possible. Once you've done this, repeat this step with your putter but this time close your eyes while you're putting.

When you are done with these 4 steps, then move a little farther back to 20 or 30 feet and repeat this same process.

Also, you want to start off doing this drill on a fairly level part of the green. But after you've done that, you can move to downhill and uphill putts too if you like.

This speed drill will definitely help your distance control in your putting and have you eliminating three putts in no time.
