Why Correct Putting Alignment Is So Important To Great Putting

By: The Putting Genius

Correct putting alignment will help you putt your best. There are a few components of great putting that will allow you to putt well consistently. Making sure you have the correct fundamentals is a huge key to becoming a consistent and great putter. One of the most important fundamentals in putting is being aligned correctly.

It is really easy to get misaligned because when you stand over the golf ball, you are in a position perpendicular to your target line. If you could see yourself from behind your target line while you were setting up, it would be much easier to line up correctly. The way that you stand over the golf ball while setting up can easily give an illusion to the golfer and thus cause alignment problems with putting. The golfer thinks they are setting up square to their target line, but in fact they often are misaligned to the left or the right of the target.

Even a slight misalignment can throw off your putting stroke. The most common problem is making one or more compensations in your putting stroke to adjust for poor alignment. If you are aligned incorrectly, and you make a good stroke, you may very likely miss your putt.

If you are aligned incorrectly, but compensate in your putting stroke, you may make your putt, but this is not the ideal way to putt because you'll have a harder time being consistent when having to make extra compensations.

When you are putting on the practice green, I highly recommend you put a couple of clubs down on the green to check your alignment. Set a club down along the line of your feet and one club down in front of the golf ball, parallel to the other club. This will allow you to develop a feel of how to align correctly, so when you are out on the golf course, it will become second nature to you. Once you get your alignment correct, you can now work on building or maintaining a consistent, repeatable putting stroke.
